A risk assessment must be performed on any work environment and activity to identify hazards, determine what controls are in place and how they are working. Failure to do so could leave businesses open to liability should an employee be harmed. This course explains the legal responsibilities placed on employers and employees to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments of their workplaces and work activities. It also covers the five key steps that should be taken when completing an assessment and how to do it.
This course also provides an understanding of the hierarchy of control and the role it plays in reducing and eliminating hazards. Finally, it looks at behavioural safety and the benefits of adopting good health and safety practices. Upon completion of the course learners will be required to complete an online assessment consisting of 20 multiple choice questions. The test is marked automatically and results are available instantly. Unlimited resits are available at no extra cost.
Reporting
Workers should be instructed in how to report hazards, incidents, injuries, and concerns. They should also be notified that they can participate in the safety and health program without fear of retaliation.
In addition to formal courses, training and education can be delivered through daily toolbox talks, weekly safety meetings, peer-to-peer mentoring, on-the-job training, and demonstrations. Regardless of the method, effective training and education should be provided in the language and literacy level that workers will understand.
Online Safety Awareness eLearning is a short course that introduces employees to the UO’s general, accident and first aid policies. Upon completion, employees are clearly instructed where to find additional information should they need it.
